 I must ask your indulgence of my current circumstances. We have been fortunate enough to have recently sold our home and we are moving to Rayne, La., to be nearer to our daughter Kim, son in law Mike and grandson, Sebastian. We have bought a home and will be moving in shortly. Needless to say, I have very little time to devote to my genealogy right now. I also have a trip to Stephentown planned during the first and second week in September. We are busy, busy right now. I will be back answering my genealogy email and working on the site as soon as I can get settled in our new home. Thank you for your patience with my slowness in answering your requests. Tina |

IMPORTANT
The Stephentown Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help them to survey some of the 77 cemeteries located in Stephentown. If you live in the area, this would be a great way to spend an afternoon and to help preserve the heritage that the cemeteries provide. The Society will provide each volunteer or volunteer team with a one page survey form, along with an introductory letter to explain the survey to property owners. To volunteer or to obtain more intormation on the survey, call Society President Patricia Flint at 733-5871 or Sandy Hamer at 733-0196. Please mention the site if you volunteer and heard about the project from this notice or the site update in your email. They need to know that site viewers are working with them. Please consider taking your children or grandchildren and spending some time teaching them about preserving history. Let me know that you volunteer and even take a photograph and I will post it on the cemetery page on the site. |

Let me introduce myself - as I get e-mail all the time from people wondering who it is they are contacting. Here goes:
My name is Tina Martinson Ordone. I was born in Troy, NY while my parents were living in Stephentown. My mother grew up in Stephentown, as did her family for at least 5 generations that I can document. My father was a city boy, from Boston, but he spent most of his teen years in Stephentown, living with his aunt and uncle, Wayne and Rotrude McVeigh. Their son Tom is currently the town assessor in Stephentown. My mother's parents were Nelson and Doris (Moon) Sweener. They lived up on Black River Road, right where Gramp's parents had lived. Their homes don't exist anymore, but my memories of that place do. It is because of them that I have the intense interest in Stephentown that I do. Of course, being a non-professional genealogist, I have worked on my mother's ancestry for many years. Most of that research centered on Stephentown. In the course of my research, I came in contact with many people who were also researching their ancestors from Stephentown. I saw a need for information that wasn't available online, and that was the seed that was planted to create this website.
Though I grew up in nearby New Lebanon, NY, I have lived in New Orleans, Louisiana since November of 1972. My husband Clint and I have three children, Chris, Kim and Lindsay, and two grandchildren, Sebastian and Victoria. (Above with their Grammie & Poppy. Picture taken on Christmas Day, 2007, Sebastian is 8 years 11 months and Victoria is 19 months). Even the name my grandchildren have for me is rooted in Stephentown, as I called my grandmother "Gram."
I get back to the area every two or three years, as my brother Eric still lives in Pittsfield, Mass., and several of my mother's siblings still live in the area. Uncle Pete (Nelson Sweener) now lives in Troy, after living in Berlin for many years and serving as that town's assessor for about 16 years. His daughter in law now serves in that capacity. My Aunt Ann Geraldi lives in New Lebanon and Aunt Ella Amidon left Cherry Plain (near Berlin) for Bennington, VT a few years ago. It is through their rememberances and experiences in Stephentown, growing up there in the 1930's and '40's, that I came to understand the town.
As it is with many small towns, big city conveniences tend to lure people away. However, I hear from "transplants" often. People who maybe passed through and fell in love with the town. Some have visited relatives in the area. Others vacationed in the area and loved the peacefulness. Whatever the motivation, they are giving the town new blood and helping lifelong residents to revive the town.
The Stephentown Historical Society has done a wonderful job with the Heritage Center. They are wonderful people, who are dedicated to the preservation of the town's history. I would like to see them get more help in doing that. It is so important that young people become interested in the town, and the history, so that they can help to carry on. To know a person's history, is to appreciate it. The same goes for a town. Just some thoughts.
My intention, using this website, is to provide as much useful information as I can, with the help of the many people who visit. I love receiving stories and pictures, and there can never be too many.
